The Office for National Statistics is the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics and the recognised national statistical institute of the UK. It is responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels. It plays a leading role in national and international good practice in the production of official statistics. ONS works with the UK Statistics Authority.
It is independent of ministers and reports through the UK Statistics Authority to Parliament and the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collecting, analysing and disseminating statistics about the UK's economy, society and population
- Collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels
- Conducting the census in England and Wales every 10 years
- Producing the UK's National Accounts (including Gross Domestic Product, National Income and Expenditure)
- Providing statistical leadership and methodological advice for UK official statistics
- Undertaking representational roles in international contexts
The ONS is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority and functions as the executive office of the National Statistician. It produces over 600 statistical releases a year covering economic, social and population statistics
