John Alty CB

John Alty was appointed as a Non-Executive Director and member of the Board of the Trade Remedies Authority in January 2025.   John is also a Visiting Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics European Institute and a Trustee Director of the Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade, which helps businesses to trade by providing training and advice. He is an Adviser to Pagefield, a public affairs consultancy, and a Panel Member of the Competition Appeals Tribunal.  His career has been mainly spent in HM Government working on regulation, markets and business issues, with a strong EU and international dimension. Many of his roles have involved engagement with businesses and other stakeholders.  Before leaving the Government in 2021, John was acting Permanent Secretary of the Department for International Trade. From 2016-2021 he was Director General for Trade Policy, responsible for building UK trade capability and developing trade policy post the EU referendum. Other Government positions held include CEO of the UK Intellectual Property Office, and Director General for Market Regulation (“Fair Markets”) in the Business Department.
